Beauty Review & Interview | Samina Pure Minerals [Halaal make up]

Company Overview:
Born out of sheer frustration the founder Samina was inspired to create her own brand of makeup when she learnt that most products on the market contained animal derivatives. Even the supposedly natural makeup Brands often contain ingredients such as Carmine (crushed beetle)! She also felt there was too much use of chemicals in makeup. Wanting a PURE range which excluded all the bad stuff, Samina Pure Makeup was born.

For my make up review a couple of weeks a go I was searching for some images on Google when I randomly came across Samina Pure Minerals. I then looked at their website and their ethos and was astonished with the brand.

As many of you may know make-up is not great for your skin, I've always been into the natural look especially with foundation (I'd hate to look like I've bathed in talcum powder lol) at the moment I am using Maybelline New York mineral powder foundation because it's the most natural form of foundation I have found...until now.

I've heard a lot of people use Nars & MAC liquid foundations but I've never bought it due to the fact that you can't make wudhu with liquid foundations as they are oil based and the water wont reach your skin, but also because I've been through the whole 'teenage spots' and I hated it, so I've been scared to use not only liquid foundations but foundations in general because I feel it might make me get spots again by clogging up my pores. Samina Pure Minerals claims to be suitable for people with sensitive skin and people with acne so all of you that don't wear make up due to sensitive skin your answer is Samina Pure Minerals!

All of the products are not only halaal in terms of no animal derivatives have been used but are also vegan friendly as there has been no animal testing throughout the whole procedure. The brushes are all made from synthetic fibres so no animal hairs used. Samina Pure Minerals is the only Halaal certified make up brand in UK, Europe and beyond!

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the founder of Samina Pure Minerals exclusively for you (don't you feel privileged =D)

Samina Akhter,
age 42,
Owner of Samina Pure Makeup Ltd

- What is your company all about? How is it different from other make up brands out there?
We are the first Halal approved makeup company in UK, Europe and beyond.  We are free from all animal & alcohol by products as well as all chemical ingredients, so it is suitable for people with skin allergies, acne and sensitive skin.

- Why did you decide to start your own halaal make-up brand?
I was searching for pure make-up products for myself, which would be completely free from animal and alcohol by products.  I couldn’t find any which would be both natural and give me the sort of shades I was looking for.  Some people have the misconception that if the product is organic it is animal free but this is not the case.  So after much searching I decided to create my own brand.

- How did you go about setting up Samina pure minerals?
Initially we conducted lots of market research and online researches to gain greater knowledge of products, practices, formulations and trends.  We then went onto create the formulations which was tested and trialed until perfect. Our final result has seen our customer base loving the products and converting to us from using high street luxury brands.

- What were your biggest challenges when in the process of getting the company up and running?
As a mother of five children time management has been crucial as is ensuring every detail in every project from formulations, packaging, marketing is all  taken into consideration.  Little mistakes can cost in time and money.

- What have been the biggest rewards in your career?
In the short time of trading there has been many.  Getting the huge high profile media attention on a world wide scale has been amazing, we were shown on the BBC world news, ITV, Sky and other Arab channels as well as national and International newspapers and website portals.  We also won best foundation award 2010 by Miss Ecoglam which was a great recognition of the quality of our products.  More recently our blush has been voted as being in the top 10 blushers.

- How did you come up with the brand name and look?
We wanted a name that the Muslim community could identify with, as the founder the decision to use my name was not taken lightly.  Because of the passion and belief I have in the Samina Pure brand,  I decided to put my name on it.

- Do you have any real shops/stores/stalls? If so where?
We have a stockist in the Pavilions shopping centre Birmingham called Pure Halal Beauty, we also supply Zed Hair and Beauty based in Preston Contact 01772 825212,
Shaleez in Bradford contact number 07890760971 and a London, Tooting based beauty salon Contact number 07903410610.

- Do you ship worldwide? What are the methods of payment?
About 40% of our customers are from overseas, we have shipped to as far as Australia and very often Malaysia, our customer base it doted all over the world from China, US, Europe and Middle East, they come from everywhere.  We have also shipped our wholesale packs to many overseas beauty Saloons and Beauty Retail Outlets.

- Will you ever open a franchise or do you want to become a leading make-up brand in highstreet shops/drugstores?
We plan to promote the Samina Brand in many different ways, we wish to take the brand onto the High Street so that we are more accessible to our customers.  We are also keen to work with agents who wish to work from home on a part time basis, by promoting the Samina products there is a possibility of earning lots of commission, so if there are any women out there wanting an extra income get in touch with us.

- How did you balance your career and your role as a Muslim woman especially when you were in the starting stages of the business?
It has been and still is very challenging to ensure all my duties are fulfilled as a mother, wife, daughter, friend and above all to Allah SAW, but I am quite focused and dedicated, I realise that to succeed in anything the hard work is essential.  I will always spend time with my children every evening and continue to work once they are sound asleep.

- Can you give us some sneaky peaks into what to expect from Samina Pure Minerals?
We are soon to launch an exciting new range available just before Ramadan, so watch this space.

- What are your ambitions for your business?
I am passionate about taking the Samina Pure products to all women, we have big plans to take the range onto the High Streets in UK and to the Overseas market on a global scale, we have attracted many overseas distributors.

- What advice would you like to give other women out there who want to set up their own busnesses?
Only go into business if you can put 100% dedication and effort into it.  Expect some setbacks as nothing is plain sailing and market yourself and the products well.  If you have the belief and passion you can achieve success.

Our products have been formulated to give peace of mind and confidence, it allows women enjoy beauty without compromising on their beliefs.

Here are some tips on how to apply their products:

Start with clean dry skin, be sure to moisturise but make sure it has completely absorbed into skin.

1. Then follow the 3 step guide of twirl, tap and apply. First gently shake a small amount of minerals into the lid of the jar. Using a Kabuki or another buffer brush, twirl the brush around the lid until the crushed minerals are completely infused into the brush.

2. Next tap brush on the side of the lid to remove any excess powder. Be sure to keep the bristles slightly angled up while tapping. There should be no visible product on the outside of the brush.

3. Finally starting at the outside of your face lightly apply the foundation in circular motions, working inward towards the eyes and nose. Press the bristles of the brush against the skin apply in a circular or downward motion. Re-apply (starting with step two) until you achieve the look and amount of coverage you desire. A little goes a long way so be sure to not over apply! You will achieve a more natural, flawless finish if you build up several light layers.

Eyes: Choose three colours, light, medium and dark. Apply the light colour all over your eyelids going right up to the brows, next fill the eyelids with the medium shade taking the colour to the sockets. Finally apply the darker shade to the outer lids and gently follow your socket line blending well.

For added drama: Take a liner brush, dip in water and squeeze excess water then dip into a dark or vibrant eye shadow and draw a line under the outer bottom eye keeping as close as possible to the lashes. This will open your eyes to make them look wider, complete the look by applying eyeliner in the rim of your eyes with lashings of mascara!

Cheeks: Wear blush and smile when you apply it. Why? Smiling is the best way to find the apples of your cheeks. Apply to the apple of the cheek then blend up and back toward the hairline. To make it look natural blend it down, away from the cheekbone, as well.

Concealing Circles and blemishes: Apply a small amount of our mineral foundation with a slightly damp concealer brush (a clean eye shadow brush will do) go for a shade lighter than your skin tone and blend in. Apply your normal shade of mineral foundation on top using our kabuki brush.

I'm yet to try out the make-up for myself and when I do a product review will be posted inshaAllah, but from everything I have read this brand looks very promising. If after I've tried the products for myself all goes well, I will definitely be converted to Samina Pure Mineral halaal make-up.
